Free wavetable synths worth installing
Answer in brief
Vital’s Basic tier and Surge XT are complete wavetable synths that cost nothing. Pigments Play and the Massive XL Player are free as well, but they are mostly for playing presets rather than designing sounds.
Vital Basic
Vital’s free Basic tier is the full synth with 75 presets and 25 wavetables. The paid tiers add presets, tables, skins and unlimited text-to-wavetable requests, not extra synthesis. For learning or for finished tracks, Basic is a complete instrument.
Surge XT
Surge XT is open source and maintained by its community. Each patch has two scenes of three oscillators with 12 oscillator algorithms, Wavetable and Window among them, plus over 700 wavetables and a long list of effects. It runs on Mac, Windows and Linux.
Free versions of paid synths
Pigments Play gives you 100 presets and the audio-reactive Play View but leaves out modulation editing, the effects view and the sequencer view. The Massive XL Player plays its included presets and any Massive X Expansions you own, and its Demo Mode lets you try the full synth. Both are good ways to hear an engine before buying it.
When paying makes sense
Pay when a free synth stops you doing something you need, such as a preset library for your genre, a workflow that suits you better or an oscillator type the free ones lack. For free synths of every kind, not only wavetable ones, see Best Free Synth VST.

The practical advice here is our own. A maker's description of its product is not a test of how it performs.
